This introductory course explains what to do if you come across a beached dolphin.
1. |
Report the dolphin stranding to the local dolphin experts. Call for police assistance if needed. |
| 2. |
Do not return the dolphin to the ocean. Moving the dolphin without the help of an expert might cause it further harm. If the dolphin is in shallow waters, maintain it upright, do not allow water in the blowhole, and be careful of its tail. But again make sure to call for help before doing anything else. |
| 3. |
Keep people and pets away from the dolphin. |
| 4. |
Do not leave the dolphin alone. Comfort it, and keep it upright. |
| 5. |
Relieve pressure on the dolphin fins to keep it upright, and on its lungs by digging a hole under the dolphin and filling the dugout with water. |
| 6. |
Keep the dolphin cool and wet by kindly splashing it with water. But be careful not to get water in the blowhole! You can place wet towels or t-shirts on its body, but not on its blowhole, fins, or tail. |
| 7. |
If it is possible, provide shade for the dolphin. |
| 8. |
Apply lots of sunscreen or sunblock to the dolphin - this will help protect its delicate skin from the sun. But be careful not to confuse suntan lotion or oil with sunscreen! |
| 9. |
Apply ice "packs" to the fins for cooling, but do not apply ice directly to the skin. |
| 10. |
If the dolphin is found dead, it can still serve a valuable purpose for research. So please, report the stranding. |
